LBS 271: Physics I and II
Dr. Benenson has developed hundreds of pages of material running under LON-CAPA – including homework problems, tests and PowerPoint presentations – presenting as complete a set of modern learning tools as possible to help the students master what they usually find is a very difficult subject.
On-line quizzes, individualized and opened at lab time, were created as a model for future computer test administration. The threaded chat-room features of LON-CAPA are used extensively by the students. Individualized tests and exams have now been implemented. Besides the complete on-line materials with multimedia, there are also in person help rooms and a weekly collaborative study session.
There are literally hundreds of pages of material running under LON-CAPA, and it is impossible to pick one out in particular. The online material constitutes the only complete calculus-based introductory physics course available on-line. Very few students find the need to purchase a textbook. This is the only course that is run completely from LON-CAPA with all the materials and readings located there on-line.
Besides the complete on-line materials with multimedia, there are also help rooms and a weekly collaborative study session. The laboratory uses a model of the professor’s desktop to teach the students data analysis, graphing, and report writing. The ten computers in the lab have WORD, EXCEL, Kaleidagraph, and DataStudio, and the data are taken with a commercial interface-sensor system. A full report is handed in at the end of each lab with tables, graphs, etc imbedded in the text. The student’s grade includes points for clarity and presentation.
